Captain Cook's Nook

England
Yorkshire East coast
Whitby

Whitby is a pretty little fishing town and port on the east coast of Yorkshire very much connected with England's old stories and fairytales about whale fishing and other encounters with sharks and...sea monstres, It is where legendary Captain Cook learned seamanship.
I visited Whitby in a stormy December morning with a devilish freezing wind blowing and threatening even to blow away the spooky ruins of the staggering Abbey at the top of the hill shrouded in the mist. From up there one could listen to the roar of the waves as they were braking on the rocky shore.
And I would suggest, this is exactly the right weather conditions to visit Whitby if you want to get the hundred per cent of its magic. Never visit it in a glorious calm and sunny summer day. It will look very normal and flat!...
And never miss the just few miles away dreamy Robin Hood's bay.

(I used the Ilford HP5, a considerably fast film, because of very low light conditions further pushing a bit the ASA film as, on this occasion, it was very tempting to completely freeze the waves and all that sea turmoil under my feet standing uphill. That's why grain is notable but, to my opinion, on this occasion not troubling much.)

The Whitby series is dedicated to my good friends Sue and Harold Thompson, great nature admirers, very good photographers and dedicated....north Englanders!
