A vine after nine --- Oxybelis aeneus Wagler

Wenn man in der Trockenzeit im Wald nahe der Stadt Golfito (Costa Rica) unterwegs ist, kann man meist viel mehr sehen als tagsüber. Doch sollte man auch aufmerksam sein, sonst könnte man z.B. diese Erzspitznatter (Oxybelis aeneus, engl.: „vine snake“) für eine Liane halten und sich festhalten… Auch wenn sie bis auf ein leichtes Speichelgift ungefährlich ist. Sie ist von Arizona bis Kolumbien verbreitet und kommt in vielen verschiedenen Farbkombinationen vor, je nach Gebiet, in dem sie sich tarnen muss. Die Art selbst ist bei weitem nicht aufgeräumt und erste Evolutionsanalysen lassen vermuten, dass sich unter diesem Namen weit mehr als nur eine Art versteckt. Sie ist eigentlich eher tagaktiv und stellt meist den dort lebenden Anolis und Geckos nach. Ein toller Fund, den ich da um 9 Uhr abends noch hatte.

If you hike though the tropical forest near Golfito (Costa Rica) at night, you might see a lot more creatures as you would during the daytime. Yet, you have to stay cautious otherwise you might grep a vine snake (Oxybelis aeneus) instead of an actual vine. But to be honest, they are not really that venomous. You can find this snake all along the American forests from Arizona to Columbia and depending on the area, they occur in various different color combinations depending on the environment they want to fit in. This diversity is also the reason, why scientist call this species a “species complex” due to the assumption that there might be way more than one species within this term. Even though I found this one at night, they are assumed to be more active during the day and normally, they hunt the local anoles or geckos in that area. A nice discovery of a living vine I got there after nine.
