A Not So Bright Guy --- Mycena sp.

Hier das Foto eines Helmlings und ein schönes Standard-Herbstfoto. Die Gattung der Helmlinge (Mycena) ist eine extrem diverse Gattung mit 300 Arten Weltweit und 100 Arten in Deutschland. Das ist zwar an sich ein schönes Beispiel, wie hunderte ähnlicher Arten auf einem Fleck existieren können, macht eine Bestimmung aber schwer. Wer weiß welche Art das ist kann sich gerne hier melden! Ansonsten tue ich jetzt einfach mal so, als ob das hier ein "Dehnbarer Helmling, Mycena epipterygia (Scop.) S.F. Gray" ist, da diese Art ein schönes Beispiel für ein ganz besonderes Phänomen der Natur ist: Biolumineszenz. Genauso wie Glühwürmchen, Schnecken, Flagelatten und Bakterien kann dieser Pilz nämlich s.g. Luciferine herstellen, das sind große Moleküle die mit Sauerstoff reagieren und dann ein grünlich-bläuliches Licht abgeben. Die einheimischen Vertreter sind damit leider sehr sparsam, wer grün leuchtende Pilze in echt sehen will sollte lieber nach Japan reisen und nach Mycena chlorophos suchen. Der leuchtet viel stärker und sorgt für einen wahrhaftigen Märchenwald.

Here the picture of a fungus from the genus Mycena and a classic autumn composition. The genus is a perfect example of rapid evolution and diversification because more than 300 species are known worldwide and all of them live in very similar habitats. This however, makes every attempt of determination to a small PhD study and therefore I hope someone here will know which species is shown here. For now, I pretend I snapped Mycena epipterygia (Scop.) S.F. Gray, a small saprotrophic fungus that features a slight bioluminescence. Similar to fireflies, snails, dinoflagellats and bacteria this fungus is able to produce a so-called luciferin that reacts with oxygen and emits a greenish-blueish light. Unfortunately, European Mycena fungi are not that “bright” and you’ll rarely notice this phenomenon. If you want to see a better and more glowing fungus, I recommend Mycena chlorophos that grows in Japan turns the local forests into a true fairytale forests.
