Wigeons

The Eurasian wigeon is a medium-sized duck that breeds in open wetlands in the northernmost areas of Europe and Asia (Scandinavia, Russia, Siberia, up to the Barents Sea).

It’s a strongly migratory bird that migrates in winter to western and southern Europe (and sometimes even to Africa).

Now that the cold freezing temperatures are gone, the 5 wigeons in my shot are ready to fly back home. About 5000 to 7000km !!!

Dutch name : Smient
German name : Pfeifente
Latin name : Anas penelope (previously Mareca penelope)

Location : Uitkerkse polder at Blankenberge (Belgium)
