The Great Sphinx and the Pyramid of Cheops

The Great Sphinx of Giza (Abū al-Haul, English: The Terrifying One; literally: Father of Dread), commonly referred to as the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining or couchant sphinx (a mythical creature with a lion's body and a human head) that stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx is generally believed to represent the face of the Pharaoh Khafra.
It is the largest monolith statue in the world, standing 73.5 metres (241 ft) long, 19.3 metres (63 ft) wide, and 20.22 m (66.34 ft) high.[1] It is the oldest known monumental sculpture, and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafra (c. 2558–2532 BC).

Looking at this wonderful picture you can immediately feel the power of history and how directly and instantly it can bring you two thousand and more years back admiring structures that even with current facilities would be etremely difficult to aschieve!...

What I like is that photos I have seen are just of the Sphinx or a pyramid. Here you have captured the present environment in great detail. Good conversion to BW to help with those details and very good composition.

Noch scheint Ruhe zu sein vor dem großen Ansturm des Tages auf die Pyramide und die Sphinx. Beeindrucken und riesig sind sie diese Monumente.

wow, the mighty SPHINX!! a sight that makes me gape in awe, spellbound by her (his?) austere expression, riddling rep and mythical authority… must admit, though, that as an ardent child reader of both streamlined greek myth AND goscinny/uderzo,* i can't help but imagine her losing her nose to… what? napoleon??? NO!! why on earth…? no, i'm thinking plus-sized obelix spontaneously climbing the sphinx and winding up dangling from her right eye, after having accidentally kicked her sniffer off, when losing his footing! : ) sorry, shame on me! AND shame on asterix for having violated his duty of supervision in terms of his immature friend! ; )) hugs, sabine.
