Heading north on US Hwy 85 we passed Belle Fourche, which is well known by tourists for the Center of the Nation Visitor Center and museum.

However, the real geographic center of the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska) is located about 20 miles north of Belle Fourche and 8 miles off the highway on Old US Highway 85, which is a gravel road.

I admit, it was my ambition to be at the true place and not to visit an easy to access place designed for tourists.

And so it took us some time to find it. Just a small blue sign gave us a hint, where to turn off the highway. Then we missed it and found it by chance on the way back.

No car, no tourists, just plain grasslands, a gate to the small concrete pedestal with the flag and a plaque placed by the US Coast and Geodatic Survey Team in 1962.

That I call an unforgettable, unique travel experience :-)

Ich hatte zufällig herausgefunden, dass auf unserer Reiseroute auch das geographische Zentrum der USA liegen würde, und zwar in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

Dachte ich. In Wirklichkeit liegt der "wahre" Mittelpunkt etwa 20 Meilen weiter nördlich und 8 Meilen abseits des Highways mitten in der Prärie an einer Schotterstraße.

Ich gebe zu, von Ehrgeiz getrieben wollte ich den originalen, wirklichen Punkt finden und nicht den touristisch aufgemachten Park in Belle Fourche besuchen.

Das hat uns schon Mühe und Zeit gekostet. Erst hätte ich fast das kleine blaue Hinweisschild übersehen, dann sind wir dran vorbeigefahren und erst auf dem Rückweg sah ich die Flagge im Wind wehen und wusste, ich bin am Ziel.

Tja, keine Autos, keine Touristen, nur die Prärie, ein Gatter auf die Weide und der kleine Betonsockel mit der US-Flagge und einer kleinen Plakette, die den Vermessungspunkt markiert. Das wars. Ich war da.

Das nenne ich eine unvergessliche, einzigartige Reiseerfahrung.
