Sculpture of "Haji Firuz"

The traditional herald of the Nowruz season is a man called Haji Firuz. He symbolizes the rebirth of the Sumerian god of sacrifice, Domuzi, who was killed at the end of each year and reborn at the beginning of the New Year.

His face is painted black (black is an ancient Persian symbol of good luck) and wears a red costume. Then he sings and dances through the streets with tambourines and trumpets spreading good cheer and heralds the coming of the New Year.

this is so very interesting, sepideh! like bryan i knew almost nothing of the persian rites and traditions for the new year. it really broadens our horizon to get to be told about them! and this haji firuz is sitting in another haft-seen arrangement, isn't he? and with the fountain and its dolphins splish-splashing in the back it's a great symbol of life and luck, too! hugs, sabine. p.s.: i like how you captured a tiny little of the street life in the back, too!

Very interesting but it's very close of the carnival tradition in France for example, with a "herald" which is burnt at the end announcing the new season. ++++
