Little remains of another great ancient city on the banks of the river Mekhong: Souvanna Khomkham. It is located on Lao territory so getting there means a painful trip through half of the country into some of Laos' most remote corners which is why it receives so few visitors. We, however, hopped over the river Mekhong from the Golden Triangle to a huge Chinese casino on the Lao side and tried to venture further to the place. Of course, with no one but rich Thai and Chinese Bentley and Hummer driving gamblers there is little demand for a bus, a rickshaw or a bicycle rental. With no means of transport available, whatsoever, we ultimately found a shopkeeper who called somebody to drive us to the nearby Lao village. Pretty strange and unorthodox way of getting to places, but it worked out...
