On the farm (9) : Ardense Voskop

Ardense Voskop (°) is a medium sized breed of sheep whose history goes back to the sheep that, for centuries, grazed on the hills of the grasslands in the Belgian Ardennes (a low mountain range).

It’s a very hardy sheep, perfect able to withstand severe dryness, damp and cold.
It can live in the open air throughout the year and does not need a stable.

A few decades ago the Ardense Voskop was almost extinct. From a very small population the present stock was selected and raised back to a reasonable number of sheep.

(°) : There exists no specific English name for this breed of sheep but literally translated it means : Ardens fox head.

Dutch name : Ardense voskop
German name : --
Latin name : Ovis aries
