  I preferred the early medieval carvings on the pillars of the cloisters, more than i enjoyed the mosaics of the chapel itself.

  Well - there is a humanity in the carvings on the pillars of the cloisters at monreale cathedral.
  And you can get close to them.
  Whereas - the main church, inside - with its mosaics - is crowded, dark and impersonal.
  (As is the Norman chapel, in palermo itself).
