Die Aluminiumbrücke in Amsterdam hält was ihr Name verspricht: sie besteht tatsächlich überwiegend aus Aluminium. Lediglich die Geländer und die Ketten zum Aufziehen des klappbaren Teils bestehen aus Stahl.
Etwa um die Jahrtausendwende wurde der Klappmechanismus der Aluminiumbrücke außer Betrieb genommen. Offenbar gab es im Kloveniersburgwal, dem Kanal unter der Brücke, keinen Bedarf mehr für die Passage größerer Schiffe.
Da sie unter Denkmalschutz steht, blieb sie in ihrer äußeren Gestalt jedoch unverändert. Heute steht die Brücke ausschließlich Fußgängern und Radfahrern zur Verfügung.
The aluminium bridge in Amsterdam lives up to its name: it is indeed mainly made of aluminium. Only the railings and the chains for raising the folding part are made of steel.
Around the turn of the millennium, the folding mechanism of the aluminium bridge was taken out of service. Apparently there was no longer any need for the passage of larger ships in the Kloveniersburgwal, the canal under the bridge.
However, as it is a listed building, its outer appearance remained unchanged. Today, the bridge is only open to pedestrians and cyclists.
