Die Kopfzeichnung ändert sich mit der Unterart und der geographischen Verbreitung. Die stark variierende Unterart Aegithalos caudatus europaeus hat einen dunklen Kopf und findet sich vor allem in West- und Südeuropa, die weißköpfige Aegithalos caudatus caudatus in Nord- und Osteuropa. In Mitteleuropa können beide Formen nebeneinander vorkommen, es gibt aber auch Mischformen, die wie folgt unterschieden werden können.
