Christoph Scheiner SJ war Mitglied der Gesellschaft Jesu, Physiker, Optiker und Astronom sowie Berater von Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens. Der Erfinder mehrerer Instrumente wirkte auch als Professor in Ingolstadt und Rom. Er gilt neben Galilei, Thomas Harriot und Johann Fabricius als Mitentdecker der Sonnenflecken.
