Monte Santa Caterina, Favignana
Isole Egadi, Sicilia 2015

On the top of St. Catherine Mount (314 meters high) stands the military fort with the same name. Built as a viewing tower in the 9th century AD, it was enlarged during the reign of Ruggero d'Altavilla in 1081, and strengthened in the 15th century by Andrea Rizzo, Lord of Favignana, in order to defend Favignana from frequent Saracen attacks. In 1655 the fort underwent new works, and from 1794 to 1860 the Borbone turned it into a prison. When the Second World War broke out the fort was taken by the Italian army and became a defence station.
