Along the Old Main No.18 - CSX Freight Crossing the Ilchester Bridge

The historic Old Main Line was built by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad to connect the town of Relay,
just south of Baltimore, with Point of Rocks, Maryland. (*) There, the Old Main joins with the high-speed
mainline in the direction of Brunswick, Harpers Ferry, and points west.

The line meanders through the scenic valley of the Patapsco River, usually following the
river's course on its embankment, but occasionally, as is the case here at Ilchester, Maryland,
just east of Ellicott City, it crosses over the river, in this instance, on a bridge built in 1902.

The Old Main is used now by the occasional CSX freight train, although a portion of it sees the
morning and afternoon MARC commuter trains operating between Washington and Frederick, Maryland.

Here, late on a June afternoon, after five hours of patient contemplation of the peaceful Patapsco, a train-enthusiast
was rewarded by a westbound CSX heavy freight emerging from the Ilchester Tunnel onto the span across the river.
