Stamatis, 62 years old, was born and raised in Ikaria. He joined the commercial navy young and travelled around the world for many years. He stayed in New York for six years employed in various businesses, which it was not clear when I asked him. He said, he did not like the air outside of Ikaria. He came back to the island and stayed in one of the old houses in the village of Kalamos. There was not a door in the house and it was fine in the spring and summer, but in the snowy winter it was cold, and “he had to sleep with a couple of more blankets”, he said. I met him a week ago in the village of Christ of the Hills, where he went to gather cherries and make jam. He asked me to give him a lift down to Armenistis to visit his daughter and granddaughter. He was absolutely happy, relaxed and shining and offered us some cherries. I thought he must be drunk or drugged, with an air of conquered freedom and a spark in his eyes and his smile. He was chatting and was smiling along the driving , and laughing all the time. He had the look of a New York Santa, but I sensed there was not anything holly about him. He was rather an original modern Zorba type, who was in love with life and people. He was just the epitome of a care-free, happy man that I have never seen before in my life.
