Castle ‘the Commandery’ at Sint-Pieters-Voeren (Belgium)

This castle was built in Mosan Renaissance style at the beginning of the 17th century by the Knights of the Teutonic Order (°)
Restoration works took place in 1910.

There is a great nursery of trout and sturgeon at the Commandery. This is the oldest fish farming in Belgium in operation since 1885.

(°) : The Teutonic Order was a christian society of knights, founded in the Middle Ages for the crusades and to propagate or to defend the catholic faith, often with lots of violence.
In Belgium, the Teutonic Order was abolished in 1798 but still exists nowadays in Central Europe as a purely religious catholic order.

another of those beautiful belgian castles!! and captured so well, with the reflections in the murky waters and that special atmosphere – a little dark and brooding, as though we must brace ourselves for a thunderstorm later… but the faint light suits the brick facade so well! greetings, sabine.

wat een schitterend kasteel mark
en ik ken het helemaal niet
zo dichtbij waar ik woon ( maastricht)
en ik ben er nog nooit geweest
daar komt nu snel verandering in.

je hebt er trouwens 'n prachtige foto van gemaaktheel erg uitnodigend om er heen te gaan.

Great to know where this beautiful castle can be found and what is its historic background.
And after knowing the facts, one can relish in a fairy tale setting:
the pond where the Frog King lives, the castle where Sleeping Beauty awaits her prince...
